Arms Sales: Panacea or Threat of Further Escalation of Violence – “Round Table” in Kamenets-Podilsk

September 23, 2015 Ukrainian Institute completed a series of “round tables” in Kamenets-Podilsk.

At the National University named after Ogienko experts of the Institute are discussing issues related to overcoming extremism in Ukraine with teachers, students, law enforcement agencies, health care institutions and public assets.

Opening this “round table” Galina Gerega ,the Head of NGO ” Ukrainian Institute of Research of Extremism” stressed on challenges, that Ukraine must overcome today and, at the same time – to find and implement the optimal work model in difficult times for the state and society . “Main goal for our Institute is not examining of extremism itself, for us main goal is to work out recommendations, ways and methods that would be able to stop the escalation of violence in all spheres of life “- she said.

Director of the Institute Oleg Zarubinskiy turned the attention to manifestations of extremism and escalation of aggression and violence and launched an active debate on the possible consequences of legalization of small arms in Ukraine.

In addition, during the “round table” participants discussed social and psychological adaptation and rehabilitation of demobilized members of ATO, social problems and domestic conflicts in Ukraine.

Galina Gerega in conclusion of “round table” said, that all the proposals would be taken into account in further studies of UIRE.  Including – in research to overcome stereotypes and myths associated with the legalization of weapons in Ukraine , which is scheduled to present at the beginning of October.
